Now that the naughties/00's decade is well and truly over, lets look at some of the great films and series that occurred over that decade. It seems to me that was well and truly the decade of the trilogies, with the Pirates trilogy, Spiderman, SW Prequels, and of course the Lord of the Rings. The film series that impacted me the most was the lord of the rings trilogy, it's spacing over three consecutive years made the story feel almost serial to me, and when it was over, it was like saying good bye to a long running tv series rather than a set of movies. Because it was spaced out over the three epic-length movies, the sense of time was really there, even though they definitely cut out some parts of the original material. Those films truly represent the story in an amazing matter, with massive improvements in the realism of the effects, especially the location shots, which truly look like how they are described in the books.
What do you's think about this epic trilogy.
There's only one return, and it's not of the king, it's of the jedi!
Haha, but yeah, this decade definitely WAS full of sequels/trilogies. Even though the Star Wars prequel trilogy technically started in 99. I couldn't get into Lord of the Rings simply because it just wasnt my taste, my girlfriend likes it but she's into fantasy where as I'm more into sci-fi
I didn't dislike the Lord of the Rings trilogy but I do have a couple of not as good memories about them. Specifically, the third movie. I had to go to the bathroom from about half way through that so I was really happy when the screen faded to black after they threw the ring back as I thought the movie was over. However, it came back and ended another 12 or so times before it was actually over and I was dying the entire time.
Someone also mentioned something that kind of stuck with me. And before I say it, I understand that it was about the story and the journey but seriously, if those giant eagles could fly them back from the brink of death, why didn't they just get they to fly them there to begin with?
@Pete:
My thoughts exactly
Nevertheless, the lord of the rings trilogy outdoes the star wars prequels in every way imaginable. I say this in great remorse due to my star wars fanboyness, but in terms of storytelling, character development, and visuals (which the original star wars films were acclaimed for) lord of the rings dominates.
Maybe visuals, but I could not watch the rings trilogy because of how long and drawn out they were, the original star wars trilogy had GREAT character development, great storytelling, and because Uncle George won't leave them alone they unfortunately get improved visuals every week.
That's why I'll always be a student of the theory: "There's only one Return, and it aint of the King, it's of the Jedi." - Randal Graves
Well thats the thing, Lord of the Rings is a straight up adaptation of a wide-spanning literary epic, while Star Wars is more gunslinging, one-line-quipping emotional action. I love them both , but I think LOTR is more high brow.
Personally, I think you just can't compare LotR and Star Wars. Simply because they are the BEST of both genres. Star Wars has done very well creating a sci-fi world and LotR was amazing with creating a fantasy world. You just can't compare the two trilogies based on anything other than personal opinion on whether you prefer sci-fi or fantasy.
As for LotR being more high-brow, that's a bit false in some ways. Star Wars may seem more low-brow on the outside, but once you start dissecting the characters and the plot points it becomes a literary masterpiece. Both movies made excellent use of The Hero's Journey, and both- well I'm not sure about LotR, but I've seen a few things describing the symbolism in Star Wars and it's just incredible. Both movies had their epic twists (I am your father/I am a woman). Ect. Ect. You could go on and on with praising (Read: Fangasming) over the two franchises (And people have, haha)
Hands down, two epic stories.
The Star Wars prequels to me, were awesome when I was a kid but I re-watch them now and I just can't get through the whole thing, they're so bad. The LOTR trilogy was in reverse, hated them when I was younger and I really like them now. The best trilogy in my heart, will always be the original Star Wars trilogy though. As for the Spider-Man trilogy, I really didn't like any of the films, I just can't stand Tobey Maguire.
Lol. Spiderman is weird. Usually i find with trilogies that the sequel/middle one is the worst, and the first and last are better, but piderman started off bad, then spiderman 2 was awesome, and spiderman 3 was terrible. Pretty much the reverse.
I personally love the lord of the rings trilogy, I still need to get around to watching the extended versions of them, oh and has anyone seen the Ralph baski version of lord of the rings?
